Men in War

Children play with russet chestnut leaves while, scarcely fifty miles away, guns shake the night—and the hospital windows pour out cries. In the garden, a composer-soldier sits beyond the comfort of his loving wife, staring at something no one else can see.

It is the autumn of the war’s second year in a small Austrian town, where fountains murmur and familiar streets seem to pretend the battlefield is far away. Yet the hospital fills with shattered men: a few wounded officers laugh together, while a traumatized lieutenant sits apart, twitching and unable to escape the horror fixed in his mind. Even his wife’s tender words and touch cannot reach him. In this garden, what can peace mean when the war has followed its victims home?
