During the holidays, my family has owned and operated Merry Lane every year. It's an immersive experience for those diehard Christmas fans - sleigh rides, figure skating, and making toys in Santa's workshop. You can eat, sleep, and breathe Christmas for the entire month of December.

I do my best to avoid it as much as possible. All that holiday cheer is too saccharin-sweet for my taste. My sisters claim it's because I'm getting grumpy now that I'm closing in on fifty in a few years. The truth is that I lost my leg during my service in the military and it's a never-ending reminder of how different I am from everyone else around me.

When I cross paths with the new hire, Sylvie Perkins, she's practically glowing with Christmas spirit. She's determined to convert me from Ebenezer Scrooge to Father Christmas himself.

And I'm so smitten that I just might let her.
