August is hot in the Bronx. If you ain’t used to it, it can be deadly. I know, I’m in an engineering program at Fordham – full ride I might add. And I grew up here, right in Belmont.
I love the Bronx. It’s my home. My family is here. My friends are all here. Everyone I grew up with – those who made it to eighteen that is – are here. It’s a good neighborhood.
And there’s one other thing that I love about the Bronx. I mentioned that I’m at Fordham, right? Even though most outsiders would never expect a hood-rat like me to make it to university, I did. And when I did, it opened a whole world to me. Fordham is one of those high -level universities – not Ivy League, but close. Lots of kids from all over the region – hell, all over the country – want to come to Fordham. Really, young people from all over the world come to the university. It's that kind of place.
And the people who come to the school? They come in all shapes, and sizes and cultures.
And colors
See, I got this thing about white chicks.
And at university, the white chicks dig guys like me – dark, a little rough around the edges. They got this thing for the hood. And all false modesty aside, I'm not only smart, I'm good looking too! All the girls say so. And they always come back for more.
Don’t get me wrong, a sister come up to me offering what she’s got, and I’m all in! If it’s open, I’m in it.

Me and my boys were shooting hoops at the playground at Webster and 187. It’s kind of a strange playground. The courts were about ten feet below the street level for some reason. In the summer, the wind often doesn’t reach the floor, you know? So it can be really hot in the afternoon. Most folks can’t take. But me and my boys can.
So, every chance we got, we were on the courts. Freezing or burning, we were there. And so it was that August day.
That Sunday we all made a point to get to the courts before noon. In a couple of weeks, we would be separating for the fall semester. Ty was at Hunter. Tyrone was at Northwestern. Tyleek did better than the rest of us and was at Dartmouth!
Ty poked me in the shoulder. “Yo, Tysheem,” he said, “check it out.”
I grabbed the ball, and looked. At the far end of the playground, someone was sitting on the steps that led up to the street at Park Avenue. “Am I really seeing that?” I said.
“Yeah, boy,” said Ty.
Tyrone and Tyleek came over. “Yo, what’s up?” said Tyleek.
“Check out the chick,” said Ty.
And it was. Some young and lovely lady was sitting on the steps. She wore a sundress that came down near her knees. Her arms and shoulders were bare. Her feet were in flip-flops. She leaned back on her elbows, soaking up the noon-day sun. Even from this distance, I could see that she had her head thrown back and eyes closed. Her pale skin was quite stark against the dark gray of the slate steps. Her legs were crossed, and we could see well up her dress, almost to the promised land.
