Agricultural use of soils predates recorded history. The growing rather than gathering of food, started some 9,000 years ago, has been called “the agricultural revolution” by archaeologists. Profound changes in the usefulness of soils are again in progress. although not of a magnitude to be called a revolution. Soils are being used for a growing list of purposes in the industrial nations of the world.
