Edward Payson Roe (March 7, 1838 – July 19, 1888) is an American writer, priest and pastor. Edward Payson Roe was born in Moodna, Orange County, New York. He studied at Williams College and at Auburn Theological Seminary. During the American Civil War, he wrote articles for newspapers and then lectured about the war and wrote for periodicals. At the time, he was a very popular novelist, especially among middle-class people. His novels have been translated into several European languages.

From different parts of the country, and from almost every class of people, the author received many hearty assurances that his former books were sources not only of pleasure, but also of help and benefit, and he was deeply grateful for the privilege of unobtrusively entering so many households, and saying words on that subject which is inseparable from happiness in both worlds.
