Publisher Description
From New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Linwood Barclay comes a new, standalone blockbuster thriller that spins off from the events of the explosive Promise Falls trilogy.
If you made a mistake that took someone's life, you'd remember it . . . wouldn't you?
After a tragedy rocks the community of Promise Falls, Cal Weaver is asked to investigate the threats being made to the accused's family. He's heard all about it on the news: the young man who drank too much, stole a Porsche and killed a girl, and who claimed afterwards not to remember a single thing. The whole town is outraged that he got off lightly, but for reasons Cal can't explain, he accepts the job. Then Cal finds himself caught up in a vicious revenge plot, chasing someone set on delivering retribution. In Cal's experience, it's only ever a matter of time before threats turn into action. . . .
A gripping thriller packed with scandal, from the master of the twist you never saw coming.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Brian Gaffney, a confused young man who was picked up by the police wandering around downtown Promise Falls, has a strange tale to share with Det. Barry Duckworth, in bestseller Barclay's outstanding fourth thriller set in the upstate New York town (after 2016's The Twenty-Three). Brian has no idea where he has been for two days, and someone has tattooed a threatening message onto his back. Meanwhile, PI Cal Weaver has recently returned to town, and one of his first clients, Madeline Plimpton, wants his advice on how to safeguard her 18-year-old great-nephew, Jeremy Pilford. Jeremy is receiving death threats via revenge websites because he received only probation after being convicted of killing a young woman while driving drunk, based on the defense that he was too pampered to know right from wrong. Barclay adroitly blends themes of internet vitriol and simmering societal rage with a taut plot full of sly hints, unexpected twists, and red herrings. With access to both investigations, readers can make some connections before the characters do, but Barclay has surprises in store for readers and his leads alike.)

I loved this book. I loved the fact that it was Promise Falls again and Cal Weaver and Barry Duckworth were at their best. Please do another one based on Promise Falls.
