Publisher Description
It is a delightful, very simple book that is a sharp contrast to most modern fiction. It takes place in a small Scottish town in the 1920s. It concerns the adventures of Jean (Penny Plain) and her three brothers and their elderly servant woman. The youngest boy is Jean's responsibilty by choice and she also looks after her brothers. There isn't much money, but they are cheerful and optimistic and help others around them. Jean is befriended by a wealthy aristocratic lady and is also left a legacy but she continues to be a simple, warm-hearted, loving girl. I suppose you could say it was a take on Cinderella, but Jean is not impressed by power or wealth. She does end up marrying very well so it is certainly not an unhappy tale.
