Publisher Description

With the euphoria of the 1993 Provincial Parks Centennial still driving us, 1994 sees us immersed back into the serious business of building and managing a system of provincial parks and other protected areas. That is not to suggest that the Centennial was in anyway a holiday. Without relinquishing any of our duties in identifying, protecting and managing natural heritage, we still were able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the provincial parks system in a very substantial way. Altogether, we came through the Centennial with an impressive array of significant achievements and products worthy of the world class system of provincial parks that we were celebrating: new proposals for parks and other protected areas, now being advanced for regulation; three major conferences; numerous publications; several video and film documentaries; innovative corporate sponsorships; and many special park events. But perhaps most important of all, the Centennial also provided us with an opportunity to reflect upon the many significant accomplishments in the first 100 years of provincial parks, and to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of many successive governments, interest groups and private citizens, whose sincere and often unsung efforts translate into the provincial park system that we all know and cherish so well (Figure 1).
