Publisher Description
Michael Müller was a German-American Redemptorist priest and one of the leading Catholic polemicists of the late-nineteenth-century United States. *Public School Education* (1872) was his major book-length intervention in the long American argument between Catholics and the public-school establishment of the post-Civil-War period.
Müller's argument: the American common school of the 1870s is not religiously neutral but actively Protestant — its King James Bible readings, its prayers, its religious assumptions, and its civic ideology are all calibrated to a generic American Protestantism that Catholic parents have neither chosen nor consented to for their children.
