Quaint Courtships

A lantern flickers among the snowy tombstones as young Alfred Price asks Letty Morris to wait two years for him. Her answer is not what he expects: “I will … fly with you!”

In Old Chester, where even a young couple’s conversation is expected to be genteel, Alfred and Letty’s romance soon draws the notice—and disapproval—of their parents. The town remembers Alfred very differently from the stout, pipe-smoking old captain he becomes: once a ruddy youth in a high-waisted coat, he is ready to risk everything for Letty, who must choose between obedience and a daring escape. Their plan brings them to the minister’s house on a winter night, with a lantern, a waiting chaise, and one crucial request. Will the young lovers reach the altar before their families can stop them?
