A soft finish
The first two books of this series were, honestly, better. This third book has too many detailed sword fights, and plot lines which don’t seem to accomplish much- the great army splits into separate missions, but they don’t seem to actually accomplish anything that vital in their separation- like, I can understand the characters reasoning, but since it didn’t much advance the actual story line, it felt like just a device to manage a large and growing cast of characters and keep switching scenes between various subplots , to build suspense. The first book in the series was exceptional- tight as a drum. I finished it in two days and looked at and thought I couldn’t believe the story had carried so far, with so many developments and characters built, in such a short space. This book, I read over about a week, and didn’t find it hard to walk away when I had to. Wish there was less killing of good major characters, ala George Rr Martin. Unsatisfying. Still, a solid read, and a good series, over all.
