“She made a few shallow strides toward the stranded vehicle and felt a cold wave of anxiety washing up her chest. It was a flashback, a mosaic of live pictures: Glory Pass, sunlit rusty rocks, six bulky figures in four open top rovers, guns in hands. They came in multitude to feast on her cargo.
In a fraction of a second after the first shots reached her tractor, MarLog’s AI sent up two drones. She was blinking at the screen while round after round hit her cabin armor with dull thumps. When the drones were airborne, folks from the rovers began shooting at them, but they were too late. Four missiles were fired, and ten seconds later: four explosions, six dead. Everyone got a personal missile that day.”
