Publisher Description
The Red Market art book explores the dark side of Macao’s largest wet market, a place both extraordinarily beautiful and terrifying. The publication contains many unique photos I’ve taken during a photojournalism assignment to Macao and Hong Kong, as well as extensive commentary, relating to my personal impressions of the place.
The Red Market microcosm can be understood on many levels ranging from purely aesthetic to philosophical. In my essay, I give consideration to the relation between humans and animals, consumption, and the perception of meat as a commodity. I also juxtapose the aesthetic allure of the place with its underlying cruelty. A quote from the book: ‘If hell would be beautiful it would surely look like the Red Market.’
The Red Market is the first in a series of art books on interesting subjects and unusual places. It’s followed by ‘the Pilgrimage’, which you can also get on Apple Books. The Pilgrimage follows the Hassidic celebrations held in Lelow, Poland, providing the reader with a rare glimpse of the Hassidic culture and customs.
