Publisher Description
They were the toughest fighters in the galaxy-until they got used up. The mission: redemption-or death. The troops were walking dead already,so there wasn't much of a downside. Major Arthur Farrell and the troops of Strike Force Company C41 had seen too much war with the alien Kalendru. They had too many screaming memories to be fit for combat again, but they were far too dangerous to themselves and others to be returned to civilian life. The bureaucracy that administered human affairs arranged a final mission with the same ruthless efficiency as it conducted the war against the Kalendru. C41 would guard a colony being sent to a hell planet. If the troops succeeded, they might be ready to return to human society. When the mission went horribly wrong, Art Farrell and his troops found their lives on the line as never before, protecting civilians to whom bureaucratic injustice was a new experience. And there was one more thing...A story of soldiers and civilians,of hope and, possibly, redemption. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

A march through the deadly jungle.
Redliners, written by David Drake is an amazing work of science fiction. It is about this company of soldiers, who are called strikers. Interstellar war has made them psychologically unfit for civilian life, so, they are sent out on a mission, to guard 1000 colonists on a dangerous and hostile planet. Right off the hop, their ship, 10-1442, lands on an asteroid, far from the intended landing site. This leads to an epic march of the ages, through hellish jungle terraine, where the predators are the least of your worries. You have to worry about the deadly vines which entangle you, the braine sucking insects potentially at the back of your skull, tree climbing humanoids with weapons wielded like clubs, but super sharp, this is a trifle of the dangers civilians and strikers face. It starts slow in some parts, that is my only warning.
Amazing
I think this novel was ahead of its time. The problem of PTSD has always been there, but only in recent years has it truly started to be recognized for what it is and attempts for real treatment initiated. Fantastic book. Memorable characters that will stay with me.

Well written with believable characters. It just goes to show how acting human isn't so hard. We just need the chance to remember.
