In 1961 Random House publishers released a blockbuster book, an epic-length novel of the life of one of history's greatest painters, Rembrandt. The author was Gladys Schmitt, who established herself as a master of the historical novel in 1946 with the Number One bestseller David the King about the life of the biblical King David. Her novel Rembrandt likewise scaled the charts and won admiration from a wide variety of the critics who noted the deep research done for the book. The novel begins with the mercurial teenage Rembrandt who was apprenticing with the art master Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburg.
