Richard Vandermarck

Pauline has never taken a walk alone, and the windows of her dark Varick Street home offer nothing worth watching. Then a young business partner begins looking her way—and asking her to join the conversation.

In a gloomy New York house where the furniture has stood unchanged for forty years, nearly seventeen-year-old Pauline has grown up an orphan, watched over more by servants than by her absorbed uncle, Leonard. Books have been her escape from a life that seems as narrow as the street outside. Richard Vandermarck, Leonard’s new junior partner, brings her stories, books, and a welcome place at the dinner table; soon even the house begins to stir. But the world beyond its doors holds its own rules about affection and standing. What will Pauline find when Richard’s attention leads her beyond the life she has always known?
