Publisher Description
There’s been a string of Bigfoot sightings in Roanoke Ridge. Do they have something to do with the body in the woods?
When Bigfoot researcher Professor Berton Sorel goes missing in the temperate rainforest of Roanoke Ridge, Oregon, help is summoned in the form of his former star pupil, Laura Reagan, online science populist and avowed skeptic. But what begins as a simple search and rescue operation takes a drastic turn when a body is discovered — and it isn’t the professor’s.
Caught in the fallout of the suspicious death, perplexed by a sudden wave of Bigfoot sightings, and still desperately searching for Professor Sorel, Reagan reluctantly admits two things: her old mentor was right about there being secrets hidden in Roanoke Ridge, and it’s up to her to uncover them.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
When the words “Sasquatch” and “cotton candy” appear in the opening sentence, you know you’re in for an entertaining read. Eccentric professor Berton Sorel isn’t just a mentor to Laura Reagan, he’s like a father. So when he goes missing while hunting for bigfoot, Laura is determined to find him before it’s too late. Unfortunately, she arrives in a small Northwest town to begin her search just in time for the annual bigfoot festival—setting a very topsy-turvy tone for her mission. Author J.J. Dupuis has tons of fun with his cryptozoologist heroine, surrounding the skeptical Laura with dedicated “squatchers,” scary militiamen, and quirky local cops who are suspicious of everybody, even bigfoot. With time running out for the professor—and Laura uncovering some seriously shocking secrets—you’ll want to solve this mystery as much as she does.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Canadian Dupuis's diverting debut and series launch introduces Laura Reagan, a cryptozoological investigator, and her best friend, Saad, who "knows the difference between hard science and pseudoscience." The pair are on their way to Roanoke Ridge, Ore., where the annual Roanoke Valley Bigfoot Festival is underway and where they plan to help locate missing professor Berton Sorel, Laura's mentor at university and family friend, who recently disappeared while working on a video production titled The Million Dollar Bigfoot Hunt. While looking for the professor, Laura, Saad, and the other searchers come across the body of Rick Driver, "a notorious hoaxer, known for claiming to have a dead Bigfoot in his freezer." Is Bigfoot real? What has happened to the professor? Why are sightings of Sasquatch increasing? Quotes from noted champions of Sasquatchery add an amusing sense of authenticity to the narrative, though readers should be prepared for a longish lecture on Bigfoot and global warming. Despite the one-note minor characters, Laura has enough substance to suggest she can sustain a series.
