Publisher Description

Gary Giddins has been called "the best jazz writer in America today" (Esquire). Louis Armstrong has been called the most influential jazz musician of the century. Together this auspicious pairing has resulted in Satchmo, one of the most vivid and fascinating portraits ever drawn of perhaps the greatest figure in the history of American music. Available now at a new price, this text-only edition is the authoritative introduction to Armstrong's life and art for the curious newcomer, and offers fresh insight even for the serious student of Pops.

consider before purchase

just FYI, Gary Giddins is obviously a great jazz writer, one of the very best — but this ebook is priced at $19.99 and it is disappointinngly short, more like an expanded magazine article than a book by the usual standards of Giddins. Always diifficult to compare epages against a “real” book, but this one is certainly short, with short chapters as well. Not saying it’s bad by any means, but probably not worth $20 when his full-length books (like his amazing 400 page collection of published jazz articles) are typically priced at that or even lower from online vendors. I didn’t even check tha page total before purchase — I mistakenly assumed that if it was priced as a full length book and it was Giiddins, it must be a long and deep read, but this is not the case. - probably a fine short read, and probably worth more like $10 compared to other very short ebooks with a 20+ yr old publishing date. I haven’t finished it, but that was because I was so disappointed I actually stopped because I could tell I wouild have finished it before the afternoon was over . . . I mean I read an entire chapter in about 10 min, I initially thought I had a broken ebook with missing epages, but the chapter was actually that short. Bottom line, there are many well-regarded books about Louis Armstrong and most were written after this one, and if you’re looking for a nice long read, you might want to spend your money on something a bit more in-depth and immersive than this expanded essay, even if it IS a Giddins essay
