Introduction Women asylum-seekers in the UK who are pregnant are extremely vulnerable, as demonstrated by stark figures from the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health, (1) which reported that, for the period 2003 to 2005, there were 36 maternal deaths among refugees and asylum-seekers--representing 12% of maternal deaths at the time, though this group can only be a tiny proportion of women giving birth.
