Gwenyth is charged with bringing in a deadly pyrate mage and intends to do just that. Until she learns she may not be as different from him as she once believed.
When Gwenyth Hutchinson joins The Order, she dedicates her life to leaving her haunted past behind and chasing down every pyrate mage engaging in forbidden magic. The most dangerous is Jack Darrow, a slithering serpent known to have a tangled history with the woman who founded The Order after her traumatic experience with him. Gwenyth wants to ensure the safety of society -- especially women -- and pay The Order back for giving her life back to her. In order to do that, she must bring Jack in no matter what.
However, when she encounters a deadly opponent, and Jack himself saves her life, she's confronted with a very different man than the one her mentor has painted. There is a danger to him, certainly. But he's more than the monster society sees him as.
When Gwenyth discovers a dark secret within herself, the only person who can help her with it is Jack. But she doesn't know if she's willing to trust him with something that could threaten the fragile life she's built since her escape from her past. It's not just her life on the line, but her heart as well.

Quite an enjoyable read
I loved this book.
I enjoyed that the book is well written and that there was some enriched vocabulary I didn't know as English is my second language. That was quite pleasing to me and told me I was getting a worthy read.
I wasn't sure I was going to like Gwenyth because she seemed weak and I normally am enjoying strong female leads more. I was wrong. She is sometimes weak because of her past experiences and because of the role females have in her society, but she also still has a back bone and a fierceness to her. I enjoyed when it got out and look forward to seeing it take a stronger shape in the next books to come.
Jack is a character I really enjoyed. He has multiple facets to him and he brings a touch of mystery to the story.
The two together have a great chemistry and it was fun and interesting to see their fondness for each other grow despite the fact they first meet when they are at completely opposite sides.
I loved the world the romantic adventure was set in: a world where an old evil made magic illegal, were there seems to be a political entity that lies to its followers, where there are pirates, where there is a well protected powerful entity that is feared... There is a lot to work with and I can't wait to see where the author will bring the story.
All in all, this was a quick and interesting read that I recommend.

I loved the original series, and this one’s starting out to follow closely in its footsteps
I loved the original series, and this one’s starting out to follow closely in its footsteps. It’s been just long enough since I read those other books, that everything in this one feels a little unfamiliar again. But, since this is apparently several years later and not set exactly where that happened, it made sense that everything would feel brand new. I really liked Jack. His name leaves a little to be desired, being so similar to our favorite pirate of the Caribbean, but the character I kinda loved. Gwen left me swinging from extremes. She, herself, tends to experience life in extremes. She’s either a frightened rabbit hiding from predators or a fierce warrior willing to take on all challengers. Personally, I would have liked to have spent more time seeing her learning how to balance those aspects. It looks like the political intrigue has only gotten deeper and more complex from the time of the first series and I’m already desperate to find out what the next book will bring.
