Siena is a medieval hill town in central Tuscany in northern Italy, close to Lucca, Pisa and Florence. Siena and the other hill towns of Tuscany were settled in Etruscan times in the first millennium BC and prior to the establishment of the Roman Empire. Siena is known for its foodie culture, fine museums, artwork and historical buildings including its famous 13th century cathedral which features impressive art installations and marble flooring. A unique horse race known as the Palio is held twice-a-year in the Piazza del Campo which is itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many important Renaissance artists once lived in Siena. The 13th century University of Siena, is one of the oldest universities in the world and the Chianti and Montepulciano wine regions are close-by.
