Southern Lights and Shadows

A dry branch snaps beneath Kerry’s foot like a toy pistol—and the hungry policeman plunges into a mountain cave before he knows who is waiting inside.

In the deep quiet of the Southern mountains, Kerry has come to capture the outlaw Andy Proudfoot. But the towering stranger who appears at the cave’s entrance has a bleeding hand, a gentle voice, and a claim on Kerry’s compassion. The handcuffs in the policeman’s pocket are meant for Andy; instead, Kerry uses his handkerchief to bind the wound, then stays to share supper beside the fire. As the two men grow at ease in their wilderness refuge, duty and fellowship pull Kerry in opposite directions. How long can he keep his real purpose hidden from the man he is beginning to understand?
