We were already huge fans of Jason Reynolds and his fun, honest, socially conscious books for young people, but this brilliant joint project with historian Ibram X. Kendi put us over the top. Kendi’s book Stamped from the Beginning—which received the National Book Award for nonfiction in 2016—traced the history of racist and antiracist ideas in the United States, from colonialism to the doublespeak of the Reagan era to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Reynolds remixes the material for young adults, making it accessible to a larger audience.
