Steppingstones To Turkish

My love for Turkey began as a child when I spent two weeks during the Easter holidays in the gorgeous town of Dalyan, situated along the Mediterranean coast and has been growing ever since. Over the years I learnt a few words, but nowhere near enough to fully immerse myself in the rich, fascinating culture that Turkey has to offer. However, one bleak November afternoon, having just returned from a glorious two weeks in Dalyan and in the midst of holiday blues, something clicked, and I suddenly decided that I was going to completely commit myself to learning Turkish.

Fast forward all these years later, I can say that Turkish has been an absolute pleasure to learn and nowhere near as intimidating as rumoured. I’ve got to admit, at the beginning, since the grammar is completely different to English, I found it incredibly frustrating and was tempted to just give up every single time I revisited my textbooks. Thankfully, after letting it all sink in I slowly started to embrace this new way of speaking. This small success spurred me on and motivated me to stick with it, and I’m so glad I did, as in no time everything started to fall into place as I began to really appreciate the simplicity of this beautiful, melodic language.
