Publisher Description

Widowed schoolteacher Lainie Lovett has three passions: her two nearly-grown children, her fourth-grade students at the Hopwell School, and the Rockettes, her recreational soccer team. One evening after soccer practice, she’s startled to spot the husband of one of her teammates canoodling with another woman in a local eatery. She’s even more shocked when he turns up dead the next day. And more shocked yet when she winds up under suspicion as an accessory to murder. But Lainie is smart and she’s stubborn. She’ll figure out who killed her teammate’s husband—if she can stay out of jail, if she can stay alive, and if she can hang onto her sense of humor.

Still Kicking

I rate this book a 7 out of 10. While I enjoyed it, It rambled too much. Perhaps Ms Arnold was giving us lots of background as this is the first of a series but I found it excessive. Will I read any others of hers? Possibly, but I have still quite a number of paperbacks and of eBook to get through so I may never get through enough of them to go back to an author previously read and enjoyed.

Still Kicking

This is an amusing story about Lanie Lovett who is a 4th grade teacher, mother of 2 grown children and loves playing soccer with the Rockettes. After soccer practice Lanie and a couple of her team mates went for a drink and saw the husband of another woman on the team at the bar. But he was with another woman. She's shocked when his body is found the next day. This man had a lot of enemies since he had been leveling huge forests and building McMansions. He wasn't liked by his employees either so his foreman, Bill Stavik, was constantly fighting with him on their behalf. Since Bill found the body, he is automatically a suspect. Lanie becomes a suspect when she goes to the murder scene to confirm that he was actually dead and the police see her there.

A romance starts between Bill and Lanie which makes the police more suspicious of them. Lanie wants to clear them and find the real murderer so starts to investigate.

I was looking for something light and amusing and that's what I got in this murder mystery. When an author takes the time to get the reader to feel an connection with their characters - any sort of connection - that author has succeeded in one of the most difficult tasks they can have. Judith Arnold has done just that. Her characters are real in a world that is both familiar and different from the ones most readers are used to. I liked that Lanie was a mature woman who had experience with life. What I couldn't understand in this story was how Lanie could figure out who the killer was but the police couldn't. OK, the officer in charge of this case was not too bright so it didn't take much to see he wasn't going to solve this case.

I loved that I was surprised to find out who the murderer was.
