Surprised by Joy

C. S. Lewis, the beloved author of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia, tells the remarkable true story of his journey from atheism to Christian faith in this classic spiritual autobiography.

Long before he became one of the most influential Christian writers of the twentieth century, C. S. Lewis was a grieving boy, a rebellious schoolboy, and a brilliant young atheist. All along, he was haunted by a piercing, bittersweet longing he called “Joy,” a desire no earthly pleasure could satisfy. In Surprised by Joy, Lewis follows that longing from his childhood in Belfast to his hard-won conversion at Oxford. He shows how his lifelong search for its source led him, one reluctant step at a time, to God. With wit, candor, and luminous prose, Lewis explores:
His mother’s early death and the loss that drove him from faithHis lonely, harsh years at English boarding schoolsThe Norse myths and “Northernness” that awakened his imaginationHis service in the trenches of World War IThe friendships, books, and debates that dismantled his atheism
Surprised by Joy is more than a memoir. It is an honest, intellectually serious account of doubt and belief, and a key to understanding the mind behind Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, and Mere Christianity. Lewis’s idea that our deepest longings point toward God still speaks to seekers, skeptics, and believers alike.

This book is for C. S. Lewis fans, readers of Christian memoir and spiritual autobiography, and anyone wrestling with questions of faith, meaning, and the desire for something more. Readers who treasured Augustine’s Confessions or Thomas Merton’s The Seven Storey Mountain will find in Surprised by Joy a companion classic of conversion and the search for God.
