Survival Type

On the rain-drenched alien world of Niobe, Arthur Lanceford fights for every breath, every step, and every scrap of survival. Mud, heat, insect swarms, and the deadly sith bloodsucker make the planet a place built to punish outsiders, yet Niobe's eerie beauty and brutal ecology also conceal immense value: it is one of the few worlds where viscaya can be grown, the source of gerontin, a priceless life-extending drug the Confederation desperately wants. Traveling with the native Kron, Lanceford confronts the unsettling contrast between human fragility and Niobian resilience. The Niobians are courteous, intellectually subtle, and physically adapted to their world, but alien in body, habits, and customs, from their strange food to their refusal to force aid on the unwilling. Lanceford's journey through the jungle, his brief triumph over a sith, and his ordeal in a smoke-choked hunthouse all sharpen the tension between cultures. When a sith bite triggers a terrifying allergic reaction, Lanceford is driven to the brink of death. Kron's painful remedy saves him and opens an astonishing mental contact that hints at a far deeper understanding between species. By the time Lanceford reaches Base Alpha, he carries not only a cure and a breakthrough, but the unsettling knowledge that Niobe may change humanity as much as humanity hopes to change Niobe.
