Publisher Description

In Winnipeg, school is dismissed for the day. Teri gets on the school bus and sits there watching for her sister. Everyone is loaded up and the bus goes to move.
“Wait! My sister’s not on the bus!” Teri tells the bus driver.
“Who’s your sister?” the driver asks.
“Dani.”
“Her aide said she was picked up already.”
“Oh.” Teri wonders why her dad didn’t mention that Dani had an appointment. Maybe I’ll get some time to myself before they get home. Now that school has started for the year, it’s twelve year old Teri’s responsibility to look after her sister after school.
Teri enjoys a bit of solitude for awhile before getting bored and lonely. Before long her dad walks in the door.
“Where’s Dani?” Teri asks him.
“What do mean? I just got in the door.”
“The bus driver said she got picked up early today. I thought you probably took her to a doctor’s appointment or something.”
“No.” He pushes aside his panic, and starts calling various relatives. Tries the school, too, but of course they’re closed.
“Ungelica wouldn’t have her, would she?” he wonders, so he tries that number, too, but there is no answer.
“I'm calling the police.” Gordon puts in the call, explaining to them that the child has a developmental level of a toddler and can’t speak more than a few words.
After a frustrating evening of pacing back and forth and calling everyone he can think of, Gordon tries my house for the sixth time.
“Hello?”
“Did you take her?” he blurts out.
“Huh? Who is this?” Karel-Ann has just been woken from sleep and hasn’t a clue who this maniac is shouting at her.
“Do you have Dani? Someone picked her up from school without telling me.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
Karel-Ann, and is about to tell him that he must have a wrong number when he continues, “If you have her, you’re going to be sorry because I’ve already called the police.” Then he slams down the phone.
“Crazy person.” Karel-Ann mumbles to herself, as she tries to get comfortable again, too tired to put two and two together.
