Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap Stories shared some of the best material from Randy’s hit CBC Radio show Vinyl Tap. Here, in Tales from Beyond the Tap, Randy tells more great stories from a life in rock—all of the fun, hardships, and adventure that haven’t been featured on the radio. This is Randy Bachman, unplugged!
Tales from Beyond the Tap gives rock fans a VIP tour on an extraordinary life in music. Randy has met, and even performed with, almost every musician you can think of, but who are the artists he wishes he had met? The answers may surprise you. What is Randy’s creative process for writing a hit song and what is it like working with some of those famous musicians? When you’ve played thousands of gigs over a fifty-year career, from church basements to Madison Square Garden, they can become a blur—but there are some performances that stand out. And life on the road is not as glamorous as most people imagine. Randy shares his experiences from station wagons and six-to-a-room motels to custom coaches, jets, and luxury suites. Randy has seen the Canadian music scene develop from the beginning, and his thoughts on its evolution will make you appreciate the music even more.
And for the first time, Randy discusses his roller-coaster relationship with former Guess Who bandmate Burton Cummings.
Tales From Beyond The Tap offers a rare and exclusive glimpse behind the man, the music, and the show that puts radio back on top.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In this follow-up to Vinyl Tap Stories, Bachman of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive highlights pivotal moments and interesting facts from his storied 50-year career in rock music. He and musicologist John Einarson selected 20 queries from fans of his CBC radio show to become chapters of this book including "The Recordings That Changed My Life" and "Burton and Me." Bachman, who developed a range of guitar techniques for a new generation of guitar players, writes about guitarists Lenny Breau and Scotty Moore as his main influences. Bachman studied guitar with Breau and was inspired by his rendition of "Oh By Jingo." Breau's elegant playing and Moore's solos on Elvis Presley's recordings strengthened his resolve to become a professional musician. When The Guess Who recorded Wheatfield Soul in A&R studios in 1968, Bachman was impressed by how the expertise of sound engineer Phil Ramone contributed to the quality of the recording. As a songwriter/producer Bachman has helped pique greater interest in Canadian music internationally. Though directed primarily at his fans, the book and its colorful and lively patter should have broad appeal for rock music enthusiasts.
