Ten Boys from Dickens

“God bless us every one!” Tiny Tim’s clear voice rises over the Crachits’ Christmas feast—while beside him, a little crutch rests against the floor.

Kate Dickinson Sweetser gathers ten boys from Dickens’s stories, beginning with the tender cheer of a poor London family at Christmas and the harsh routine of an English workhouse. Tiny Tim is cherished for his patience and kindness, though his frail body gives his family cause for worry. Oliver Twist, pale and hungry, must keep his sturdy spirit in a place where children are neglected and even a bowl of gruel is strictly measured. These boys meet a world that can be cruel, but Dickens sees in them courage, feeling, and claims on our compassion. What will each boy’s trials reveal about the people—and the world—around him?
