The Abbot opens with Sir Walter Scott's self-aware meditation on authorship, success, and the risk of following a disappointing novel with another. Though their marriage is loving, political turmoil, Halbert's absences, and childlessness leave her lonely and exposed to the contempt of proud neighbors. Around her, Scotland is riven by reform and tradition: Henry Warden hides in the castle, Abbot Eustatius opposes him, and Morton, Murray, and John Knox maneuver amid church power and faction. As Roland Graeme is escorted away under watchful guard, Lord Lindesay and his silent companion embody the novel's atmosphere of secrecy, danger, and historical suspense.
