The *Augsburg Confession* is the foundational confession of faith of the Lutheran churches. Drafted principally by Philipp Melanchthon, it was presented to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg on 25 June 1530. The Confession sets out, in twenty-eight articles, the principal doctrines of the early Reformation churches.
