WINNER OF CBC CANADA READS
WINNER OF THE STEPHEN LEACOCK MEDAL FOR HUMOUR

Here’s the set up: A burnt-out politcal aide quits just before an election—but is forced to run a hopeless campaign on the way out. He makes a deal with a crusty old Scot, Angus McLintock—an engineering professor who will do anything, anything, to avoid teaching English to engineers—to let his name stand in the election. No need to campaign, certain to lose, and so on.

Then a great scandal blows away his opponent, and to their horror, Angus is elected. He decides to see what good an honest M.P. who doesn’t care about being re-elected can do in Parliament. The results are hilarious—and with chess, a hovercraft, and the love of a good woman thrown in, this very funny book has something for everyone.

Wonderful read!

I picked this book on a whim because it looked interesting, I like supporting Canadian authors when I can, and (frankly) it was on sale. I am so glad I did!

As much as it’s a cliché, it’s true - I couldn’t put this book down. The story moves at a good pace without feeling rushed. The writing is quick and clever and wonderful. I fell instantly in love with the characters and found myself dearly hoping, as I neared the end, that there was a sequel because I didn’t want to say goodbye to them. (Spoiler: there is a sequel and a third book currently being written as well!)

The political setting of the book could give someone pause, but it really shouldn’t. The parliamentary aspects are delivered in a way that are fun, interesting, and forward the story; at no time does it feel like a high school civics lesson. Also, he manages to have a story set among the political parties while being non-partisan in his commentary (lightly mocking all the major political parties) in a bit of a David and Goliath tale of one man against the system.

I’m am now fully hooked on Fallis’ writing and look forward to reading his other books!

In short - a great book, plenty of moments which made me laugh out loud. Wish every MP was an Angus!
