"The Black Cat" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is a short meditation and a study of guilt. Why do feel, where it comes from, what should we do with it? These are questions Poe tries to answer. The narrator tells us that he has loved animals. The mutual friendship with Pluto, a beautiful black cat, lasted for several years, until the narrator become an alcoholic. One night, after coming home intoxicated, he believed the cat was avoiding him. When he tried to seize it, the panicked cat bite him, and in a fit of rage, he pulled a knife from his pocket, and gouged out the cat's eye.
