Publisher Description

What can one extraordinary life teach us about democracy, war, reconciliation, and the possibility of peace?

In 1898, twelve-year-old Takashi Komatsu arrived in New York City from Tokyo without his family. Living at the YMCA and working punishing hours for a demanding merchant, his future changed after a chance encounter with a compassionate Japanese Christian missionary on home leave in America.

Komatsu went on to graduate magna c*m laude from Harvard, study international law, and deliver a commencement address titled Dawn of Peace—an expression of ideals that would follow him throughout his life. Returning to Japan, he became a leading industrialist as the country underwent a profound transformation: the rise of democracy, expanding imperial ambition and nationalism, military rule, war and defeat, and the difficult reconstruction of a democratic nation.

Yet Komatsu’s story is also inseparable from the evolving relationship between Japan and the United States. His life intersected with diplomats, business leaders, statesmen, soldiers, artists, and other figures whose experiences illuminate the two nations’ journey from adversaries to allies.

Rich in personal encounters and historical detail, The Cherry Tree Weeps for Me: A Quest for the Dawn of Peace is narrative nonfiction and biography that brings a largely forgotten statesman back into view. Through Komatsu’s life—and the history surrounding it—James Mikel Wilson explores democracy, diplomacy, self-sacrifice, reconciliation, cherry-tree diplomacy, and an enduring question: What can the past teach future generations about turning former enemies into genuine partners in peace?

About the Author

James Mikel Wilson was born during World War II in Moline, Illinois, and grew up in the lingering shadow of a conflict his father and uncles had experienced firsthand but rarely discussed. That early connection helped spark a lasting curiosity about the forces that led to World War II in Europe and Asia.

Over four decades, Wilson’s work in international marketing and personal travel took him to five continents, thirty-three countries, and forty-eight states, deepening his interest in the history, culture, and politics of the places he visited. His first book, Churchill and Roosevelt: The Big Sleepover at the White House (2015), earned an Author Academy Award and was featured in connection with events at America’s National Churchill Museum and the International Churchill Society. His meticulous historical research continues in The Cherry Tree Weeps for Me, which explores Takashi Komatsu’s life against the dramatic transformation of twentieth-century Japan and Japan–America relations.
