The Collective Voice

Five novels. One constitutional society. A we that speaks from the ground up.

The Collective Voice is a fiction series set in a near-future society that has ratified new foundational documents and is learning, imperfectly and daily, what it means to live inside them. The novels are not about the revolution. They are about what comes after: the ordinary texture of a world trying to become what it said it would be.

Each novel is narrated in a collective voice. Not one person's story but a community's, a building's, a valley's, a landscape's. The we that speaks holds multiple lives simultaneously without making any of them secondary. This is both a formal choice and a philosophical one: the series is built on the argument that the self is plural, that grief is permanent weather rather than a stage to move through, that contradictions can be held without being resolved.

The five novels move across different scales and communities: a neighborhood in Youngstown building an economy from the ground up; a rural Ohio town discovering what two communities have been making together without knowing it; a building in an unnamed city where the interior work of people's lives is the subject; a continent speaking in nine landscape voices about what the earth has been carrying; a diaspora narrator asking the earth where it hurts.

The series draws on the philosophy of Marguerite Young, whose novel Miss MacIntosh, My Darling remains one of the least read and most important works of American literature. It attempts to build from that ground outward: what fiction looks like when the plural self governs form as well as content.

The framework is open. Other writers can use it.

Serious ideas belong to everyone.
