Angela Hunt’s The Debt
The Debt by Angela Hunt is a story about a woman and her husband who manage a fundamental evangelical church. Hunt uses the main character, Emma, to explain how their small church has become a personally demanding local and global program. Emma receives a telephone message at church that turns her world upside down and brings her to a point of wanting to reconcile her past. Ultimately the story suggests that many people who profess Christian values have inadvertently become sandwiched between church ideals and expectations; ultimately, a life that does not fit what Christ’s modeling demonstrated. The novel asks people of faith an important question: aside from Christian church pressure to brave a certain way, what is it that God is leading you to do?
