The Demon's Bargain

When the earth cracked and the rain refused to fall, a limping demon came to the farmers of Jeolla with an impossible offer: feed him stories, and he would feed them rain.

In this electrifying exploration of a forgotten Korean myth, we discover Heodoek—the half-black, half-red Demon of Laughter—whose gift of twelve wooden masks sparked a revolution disguised as comedy. Here was ritual born not in temples, but in muddy courtyards where peasants mocked their oppressors and the powerless became powerful, if only for a night.

But Heodoek's bargain came with a warning: laughter must be honest, even if it hurts.

Drawing on the wisdom of history and the raw power of folk tradition, this lecture reveals how ancient Korean farmers understood something we've forgotten—that joy is an act of resistance, that masks can liberate rather than conceal, and that sometimes the demons know better than the gods.

From the rice paddies of Jeolla to the struggles of our own time, this is a story about what happens when despair learns to dance.

For anyone who has ever needed to laugh in the darkness.

For anyone who has ever worn a mask and told the truth.

"Even the gods turn away when we pretend."
