McDevitt balances the two sides of his story well, never losing sight of either the fast-paced action or the message behind it.

Large scale
The Mutes are the best fictional aliens I have ever encountered. It’s a great book and beautifully imagined, but a little like Clarke’s Rama series. Almost too big and too detailed for one author to manage. That said, the peaks more than make up for the flat points.
