Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.
Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills... or someone wants her dead.

I'm glad I found this!
I must be honest, I downloaded to take part in my book club's Steampunk book of the month. After struggling through an anthology of Steampunk to get an idea about the genre I was dreading taking part with this title.
But I was so amazed! The writing is smooth and entertaining and I loved her heroine Amaranthe and her band of accidental heros. This book is not laden with made up science terms and the world is rich and so easy to be a part of.
A must must must read for all fantasy lovers! And if you find yourself at the end wanting more I've lost count of how many more there are in the series.
This has a hidden gem feel to it. The characters so vivid, it’s almost like watching a movie unfold inside your head.
Would recommend this to everyone and anyone.
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.
Often I was laughing out loud (causing my husband to stare at me strangely). I immediately bought the rest of the series and I recommend it to all my friends who like a good read.
