Publisher Description

The thrilling final showdown between Jennifer Strange and her most formidable foe.

The Mighty Shandar is back! The most powerful wizard in the world returns to the unUnited Kingdom after failing to solve that pesky Dragon Problem, determined to get rid of the last two remaining dragons once and for all. If he fails, he must return the fee he was paid: eighteen dray-weights of gold, which at current prices is approximately eight trillion moolah (enough to pay for the Fifth Troll War and make a down payment on the sixth). As Shandar’s agent, Miss D’argento, affirms: “The Mighty Shandar doesn’t do refunds.”

It shouldn’t be a problem for this Wizardus Maximus, but for one thing: a small House of Enchantment named Kazam stands in his way, led by acting manager Jennifer Strange . . .

Eleven stages of the here's journey

In the long-awaited return to the Kingdom of Hereford, Jasper Fforde takes his hero Jennifer Strange out of the familiar setting, the rundown charm of Kazam House of Enchantment, and sends her on an epic quest into the dangerous wilds of the Cambrian Empire. Each step of the way, the readers get to understand how the fractured unUnited Kingdom is every bit like the actual world we live in, minus the non-evolutionary creatures, an industry supported by killing off tourists and more obviously insane politicians. In terms of Joseph Campbell's heroic quests, all but the final one gets interpreted to fit in with Fforde's clever everyday world, and it isn't until this almost ending that we get to understand how much of her usual means of support: other wizards at Kazam, trusty friends like Tiger and Perkins, and the dragons themselves, and suspended from the action. Even the antagonist Shandar (whose return was once the working title of this novel) has only a brief four minutes before he disappears. At least there is some comfort in that this will not be the last time readers get to visit Jennifer Strange's world, but will have to prepare fro something much stranger when book four comes out.
