The Fire This Time

I am an openly gay man. I am also an uncle to two nephews, one of whom is gay and now a senior in high school. Although I am a published author and am close to my family, the Orlando shooting made me realize that I have never had a serious discussion about what it is to be gay with my nephew, nor have I ever put my observations in words. This week, I decided to take the time to write my thoughts on the world he is coming out to—a culture full of opportunity and acceptance but also apathy and danger. This is my letter to him and to all young gay men.
