The First Men in the Moon

For thirteen evenings, a strange little man trudges out to admire the sunset—and never once looks at it. When Mr. Bedford finally asks why, he gets an answer that opens the door to adventures neither man could have planned.

At Lympne in Kent, where Roman ruins look out across lonely marshes, Bedford has come to escape a business failure and write a play. Instead, he finds himself watching Mr. Cavor: a restless, buzzing little scientist whose mind is so occupied that even his daily walk has become a habit he barely notices. Bedford’s curiosity draws the two men together, and Cavor’s preoccupation points toward a project far more extraordinary than the drama Bedford hoped to write. What is Cavor thinking about—and where might it take them?
