David Domke, professor of communication at the University of Washington, is coauthor of the new book The God Strategy: How Religion Became a Political Weapon in America (Oxford University Press). In the book, Domke and his coauthor, Kevin Coe, discuss the fusion of religion and politics in America and the tendency of faith to be used as a political weapon. Domke discussed the book recently with Church & State. Q. What is it about the American psyche that makes religion and politics such a combustible mixture? In other Western societies--European nations, Canada, Australia and others--religion doesn't play much of a political role. Why here?
