Considered to be one of the founding works of western history, The Histories by the Greek historian Herodotus serves as a comprehensive record of the history and politics of ancient Greece, its allies, and its enemies, during the fifth century BC.

Covering the period leading up to and during the Greco-Persian Wars, Herodotus’s written account was based on interviews and stories collected during his extensive travels throughout the ancient world. Although criticized, like many scholars of that time, for manipulating events and accounts in order to improve the narrative tone, Herodotus’s writings continue to be a relevant and telling depiction of life in ancient times.
