The Inhabited

A visitor from a dying civilization comes to Earth to decide whether humanity can become a refuge for his people. His first attempts at mind-entry are anything but triumphant: he is flung into a cat's lively, mischievous consciousness, then into human lives that overwhelm him with sensation, sleep, affection, music, drink, and the simple wonder of being embodied. What begins as a reconnaissance mission becomes an intoxicating education in ordinary life, from a fishing trip and the bond between a boy and his dog to the profound mystery of a pregnant woman and the living continuity of Earth itself. But the planet is not only beautiful; it is dangerous, unstable, and full of minds the traveler cannot fully control. When he is drawn into the shattered consciousness of Mersey, a psychotic prisoner under Dr. Cloyd's care, the story turns into a tense psychiatric duel between clinical reason and alien desperation. As the doctor calmly probes the visitor's claims, a devastating truth emerges: the aliens can inhabit only minds already unbalanced, and survival may require them to surrender the very identity that defines them. In the end, Earth's greatest promise may also be its cruelest trap. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
