The Iron Arrow Head

Eugene Sue's The Iron Arrow-Head, also known as The Buckler Maiden, plunges into the turbulent age of the Northman invasion of France, where a weakened Frankish world is shaken by conquest, betrayal, and the first stirrings of renewal. Against this richly imagined medieval backdrop, Sue follows warriors, monks, nobles, and common folk as political power collides with family loyalty, religious spectacle, and brutal violence. The story moves from public disputes in Paris to abbey cells, from covert manipulation to open battle, revealing a society on the edge of collapse and transformation. At the center are figures such as the defiant skipper Eidiol, who denounces the nobles and clergy for demanding sacrifices from the people they have ignored, and Count Rothbert, whose fury leads to imprisonment and betrayal. Father Fultrade uses piety as a mask for private schemes, while Rustic the Gay arrives too late to prevent new danger. Elsewhere, the Northman assault erupts into savage heroism as Gaëlo, Shigne, and the berserker Lodbrog fight through chaos. Amid the violence, Anne and her family are reunited, and King Charles the Simple is driven toward the political price of peace: the marriage of his young daughter Ghisèle to the Viking chieftain Rolf.
