The Last Revolutionary

How do we remake a broken world? How do we fight for true freedom? How do we make our time count? Malcolm X’s last visionary year offers the riveting story of a relentless search for truth, dignity, and revolution—and a still-urgent blueprint for building a new world.

In the dramatic final year of his life, Malcolm X became someone new: an emancipated seeker who radically widened the scope of his lifelong search for truth and expanded his political and spiritual imagination to the whole world.

Freed from the Nation of Islam, he embarked on an astonishing journey of transformation. He found and lost a friendship with Muhammad Ali, made the pilgrimage to Mecca, traveled across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, met presidents and revolutionaries, debated students and diplomats, and built alliances across borders of race, religion, and nationality. At home, he sought to transform the fight for civil rights into a global struggle for human rights—and to build a movement capable of turning his rapidly evolving vision into reality.

In The Last Revolutionary, acclaimed historian Peniel E. Joseph offers a revelatory account of Malcolm X’s final year: a period of breathtaking intellectual growth, political experimentation, mortal danger, and profound personal change. Here is Malcolm not as the fixed and familiar historical icon, but as a searching, curious, vulnerable black man, intimately aware that he was being hunted by former allies and fresh enemies, but still questioning old certainties, forging new coalitions, and imagining a politics rooted in the radical dignity of every human being.

Urgently relevant and deeply moving, The Last Revolutionary reveals Malcolm X’s unfinished project of worldbuilding—and asks what his last great search can teach us about remaking our own broken world.
