The world’s demand for fresh water is growing so fast that scarcity is disrupting energy production, triggering food shortages, upending economic development, and threatening political stability. The impacts are felt now, from the U.S., which lost a full point of GDP in 2012 due to a severe drought, to Asia and the Middle East, where drought and floods triggered serious disruptions and political unrest.
