Publisher Description

Captain John Smith arrived in Jamestown in shackles. During the voyage, he was accused of mutinous talk and was supposed to be hanged once the party reached land. Fortunately, his life was spared once the official colony documents were unsealed and Smith was named a leader. Smith's story is intrinsically linked to Jamestown, as he is often credited with keeping the fragile, fledgling colony together in the early months. He had enemies, but for the most part, he seems to have been respected, both by colonists and Native Americans. He was one of the main chroniclers of the Jamestown settlement, publishing several books and memoirs, hoping to encourage further settlement and investment.
